Under-Sink RO Installation: What Happens on Install Day
A professional under-sink reverse osmosis installation usually takes two to three hours. See each step, what to clear and what gets tested.

What happens during an under-sink RO installation?
The installer checks the cabinet, isolates the cold-water line, adds a feed and drain connection, mounts a dedicated faucet, connects the RO system, flushes it and tests for leaks. A standard appointment usually takes about two to three hours.
The exact sequence changes with the sink, counter and plumbing layout. A tidy newer cabinet with an unused soap-dispenser opening is different from a tight corner cabinet below a stone counter. Good installation begins before any hole is drilled. The installer verifies the planned location, explains the connections and confirms that the standard scope still applies.

What should you do before the appointment?
Clear the cabinet, confirm access to the sink and keep the area around the kitchen workspace available. Do not disconnect plumbing yourself unless specifically asked.
Remove cleaners, bins, shelf liners and stored items from below the sink. The installer needs to see the shutoff valves, drain, dishwasher connections and cabinet walls. Clear a small section of counter for tools and system components. Pets and young children should remain away from the immediate work area.
Before install day, provide honest details about sink and counter material. Granite, quartz, porcelain, stainless steel and laminate require different drilling approaches. Mention an existing soap dispenser, instant-hot tap, air gap or old filter faucet. Send a photo if requested.
If you rent, obtain written landlord permission. Condo owners should confirm building rules related to plumbing work, shutoffs and insurance. If a whole-building water shutdown might be needed because the local shutoff does not work, that must be coordinated in advance.
A compact tankless system may need a standard electrical outlet. Extension cords should not become the permanent plan. Confirm the nearby power arrangement during the pre-installation fit check.
What does the installer inspect first?
The first inspection confirms cabinet space, valve condition, drain layout, power and faucet clearances. This prevents a technically working system from becoming awkward to service.
The installer opens and closes the local shutoff carefully to determine whether it isolates the cold-water line. Old valves can seize or begin leaking when disturbed. If a valve is visibly deteriorated or fails to close, plumbing repair may be required before the standard RO connection proceeds.
Drain geometry matters. The drain connection must be placed in an appropriate section and positioned to reduce noise, blockage and cross-flow concerns. Existing dishwasher and disposal plumbing influence the available location.
The cabinet is measured for the unit and tubing bends. Filters should remain accessible. Doors and drawers need full movement. Storage should be preserved where practical, but the system cannot be wedged into a position that prevents service or strains connections.
Above the cabinet, the installer checks the faucet’s reach, handle movement, window ledges, backsplash and underside access. The final position is confirmed with the homeowner before mounting begins.
How is the filtered-water faucet installed?
The dedicated RO faucet uses an existing suitable accessory hole or a carefully placed new opening. The mounting surface and clearances determine the method.
An unused soap-dispenser hole is often the simplest option. It avoids adding another opening and usually sits in a practical location beside the main faucet. The installer verifies the diameter and underside access before assuming it will work.
When a new hole is needed, the sink or counter material must be identified correctly. Stainless steel, composite, porcelain and natural or engineered stone each require appropriate tools and risk management. Cracks, hidden reinforcement and tight underside access can make a proposed location unsuitable.
The faucet should reach the sink bowl, rotate as designed and avoid conflict with the main faucet. Its base is sealed and secured without overtightening. Tubing is connected below with enough slack for service but not so much that it tangles with stored items.
Homeowners should approve the visible position. Moving a hole later is not a minor adjustment, so a thirty-second placement conversation is an important part of professional work.
How are the feed, drain and system connected?
A standard installation taps the cold-water supply, routes reject water to the sink drain and sends filtered water to the dedicated faucet. Each line has a different function and must be secured.
With the cold supply isolated, an approved feed adapter is installed at a suitable connection. The system receives water only from the cold line. Hot water can damage RO membrane performance and is not used as the feed.
The drain connection carries concentrate away from the membrane. Its placement follows the equipment and plumbing requirements. The opening is made cleanly, the saddle or adapter is aligned and tubing is routed without kinks.
The RO unit is positioned or mounted according to design. Tubing is cut squarely and inserted fully into push-fit connections. Bends are broad enough to maintain flow. Lines are kept away from sharp cabinet edges, hot equipment and moving drawer hardware.
If the system uses an integrated pump, power is connected after water connections are ready. The installer follows the startup sequence rather than simply opening the valve and walking away.
Why does the system need flushing and testing?
New filters and tubing must be flushed, and every pressurized connection must be inspected before the system is handed over. Commissioning is part of installation, not an optional extra.
Carbon fines, preservation solution and manufacturing residue may be present in new components. The specified flush cycle clears the system and conditions the filters. Initial water may look cloudy because of trapped air; this commonly resolves as the system flushes.
The installer checks faucet flow, pump behaviour, automatic flushing and display indicators. Feed-water and filtered-water TDS readings may be observed after appropriate flushing. A TDS number helps show membrane operation, but it is not a complete contaminant analysis.
Leak testing happens under pressure. Connections are dried and inspected, not merely glanced at while wet from installation. The faucet base, feed adapter, drain connection and every tubing port receive attention. The system may be cycled several times to check changing pressure conditions.
Cabinet surfaces are wiped, tools are removed and packaging is collected. A clean cabinet makes any future moisture easier to identify and respects the homeowner’s space.
What should the installer explain before leaving?
You should know which faucet is filtered, what the display means, when filters are due and what to do if you see water in the cabinet. A system you do not understand is not fully installed.
The installer identifies the shutoff for the RO feed and shows how to stop water to the system. You learn the normal operating sounds, including pump or flush cycles. Filter-life indicators and TDS readings are explained without presenting them as laboratory proof.
The maintenance schedule should identify pre-filters, post-filters and the membrane separately. Blink H2O includes the first year’s replacement filters. Finally, ask which water to use. The dedicated faucet is intended for drinking and cooking. The main kitchen faucet remains appropriate for washing dishes and general cleaning, preserving filter life.
What is normal after an RO installation?
Brief cloudiness from air, initial flushing and changing display readings can be normal; active leaks, persistent odour or sudden loss of flow are not. Follow the startup instructions you receive.
Use the system normally after the required flush is complete. Air may make a glass look milky for a moment and then clear from the bottom upward. This differs from particles that settle or remain suspended.
Check the cabinet later the same day and the following morning. It should be dry. A paper towel placed below connections can make tiny moisture easier to see. If any leak appears, close the RO feed valve and contact the installer rather than tightening random fittings.
Flow and rejection performance stabilize as the system conditions. Incoming water temperature affects production, so winter flow can differ from summer flow. Filters eventually load with captured material, which is why maintenance intervals matter.

What can make an installation take longer?
Failed shutoffs, difficult counter material, crowded cabinetry and unexpected drain work are the most common schedule changes. Good pre-appointment photos reduce surprises but cannot reveal every hidden condition.
An installer may pause rather than force a corroded valve or drill a questionable surface. That caution protects the kitchen. If additional work is needed, the condition and options should be explained before the scope changes.
